Since January 2023, 856 zero-enrolment schools have been closed (661 GPS, 191 GMS, 4 GHS).
595 low-enrolment schools with 1–5 students were merged with nearby schools within 2–3 km (517 GPS, 78 GMS). 26 High and 49 Senior Secondary Schools were downgraded.
Staff have been redeployed to higher-enrolment schools. Vacant buildings stay with the department for future use as libraries, gyms or sports complexes with local bodies.
